Final Year Design Project

I will share the highlight of project that was done by my part, which is the 3D plant layout design (see above) and the process simulation on the plant (see below).
For the plant layout, we were given the task by our supervisor to create not only an isometric but also a 3D layout. Due to complications from COVID, we had a very short time to submit for the presentation. I decided to use SketchUp to create the layout, as it has a large free asset library and features for animation. The laptop I used to run SketchUp barely met the system requirements (the rendering process was a nightmare). Given the short deadline and the need to learn SketchUp on the spot, the final result turned out quite well.
Prior to running the HYSYS simulation, we already did material and heat balance calculations manually for each unit operation. The purpose of using HYSYS was primarily to validate our manual calculations through simulation. We then setup the unit operations such as separators, heat exchangers, distillation columns, compressors, and reactors in HYSYS similar to our design, together with its parameters such as feed stream compositions, vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data, operating pressures, temperatures, and flow rates.
Using HYSYS’s thermodynamic property packages, we selected the proper fluid models (Peng-Robinson/ NRTL) for accurate phase behavior predictions. Once the simulation was executed, we cross-checked the mass and energy balances, ensuring the results were consistent with our manual calculations, confirming the integrity of both approaches.
